1. Preparation



1.1.    Identify the broad overall IT needs of the project.
The task was in initially daunting. I would be working alone, I would have to write a lot of the software I that needed and I had very limited funds (about £6000, the project manager managed to get this increased to £15,000) with which to purchase computers and any software that I could not write.
The UD site has neither Internet connectivity nor an academic network in place. I was going to have to store huge the binary files produced by the diagnostic equipment (over 1GB of data per participant) along with a vast amount of database records without even the most basic networking structure in place.
Given these constraints the job at hand looked difficult, however after carefully thinking through all aspects of it, I decided that it would be an excellent opportunity to prove that I could design an IT system to serve this project despite the challenges involved.
